Terms of Engagement

Exam insight

Expect 2-3 MCQs per sitting on engagement letter requirements and preconditions. The distractor to watch for is answer choices that swap auditor and management responsibilities, so if you are not sure which party owns internal control design, you will pick wrong. A commonly missed detail: AU-C 210 requires the engagement letter to state the inherent limitations of the audit (that material misstatements may go undetected), and many candidates forget this required element. Key standards: AU-C 210 (agreeing on engagement terms), AU-C 580 (management representations), and AU-C 260 (communication with those charged with governance).

What AICPA wants you to know

  • 1Identify required elements of an audit engagement letter
  • 2Understand the responsibilities of management vs. the auditor
  • 3Recognize when engagement terms should be revised or updated
  • 4Apply preconditions for accepting an audit engagement
  • 5Distinguish between engagement letters for different engagement types

Exam tip

Study smarter: before you expand each card, cover the screen and try to recall what the concept means from its title alone. Retrieving it from memory builds the recall the exam actually tests, and it beats re-reading.
